A friend of mine recently went to Southern California for vacation with his family. Like me, he has a large property in Tuolumne County with lots of quiet privacy surrounded by the beauty of the foothills and mountains. While on vacation we exchanged a text and I asked him how it was going down south. He replied, it’s going fine but “I miss the mountains”. I knew the feeling!
Last year Holly and I were in Southern California for several days and I found myself homesick for the mountains. I missed my pine trees and majestic oaks. I missed the wildlife. I missed the pigs, horses, and cows that I see when I walk with my dogs down the middle of the semi-paved roads with nowhere specific to go and (sometimes) all day to get there. I missed the mountains.
I’m the first to admit that I’m a homebody I prefer being home versus anywhere else. A big reason for that is that after seven years I still maintain a romantic perspective of life at 3100 feet – the tagline for this Golden K blog. I’m grateful that the mountains have not lost their magic. Moving to the mountains was never just a destination for me. I believe it was a destiny I was fortunate enough to fulfill. I know not everyone is so lucky in that regard and I don’t take it for granted.
So when my friend said he missed the mountains I understood.
I’m sure there are others who would miss “the nightlife in the city”. Or miss “the ocean cruise to [your favorite destination here]”. Or maybe even miss “the suburban concrete jungles with strip malls on every corner”. Yes, I have a bias and perspective having lived in those jungles for most of my life prior to moving to the mountains.
If, like me, you’re fortunate enough to already be here you know what I mean. If you aren’t already here y0u should give it a try. I’m pretty sure if you have to leave you will miss the mountains.

Having moved here from the Bay Area 26 years ago… I could never move out of our mountains! There are many reasons that we live in a vacation destination. I appreciate what others see, and more. We are so lucky and blessed and happy!
