It’s been almost eight years since Holly and I moved from the hustle and bustle of the San Francisco Bay Area to the tranquil setting of the Sierra Nevada Foothills. How fortunate we were to have taken that leap of faith and to make the move. But honestly, we didn’t know what we didn’t know. And it has been a journey not just of miles but of experiences. A transition from the suburban sprawl to the rustic charm of the forest and everything nature has to offer.
The move began a new chapter for us; a new start nestled within the majestic oaks and pines. The experience of waking up to the cool and fresh air of a spring morning or the gentle sound of the wind-blown pine trees during an autumn afternoon never gets old. Nor will the silence of night and quiet anticipation of the morning sunlight that will come sneaking into my bedroom, filtered through the pines and oaks. These experiences will always remind me of our departure from the concrete jungle. A departure that led us into a world where the rhythm of life beats in harmony with the cadence of nature.
A Welcome Change
What a welcome change from the hectic pace of suburban life! In the Sierra Nevada Foothills time seems to stretch and bend, allowing for moments of quiet contemplation and unhurried exploration. It’s a place where the simple pleasures are often the greatest. For example, a leisurely walk with my two Golden Retrievers – “the girls” – on a dirt or gravel road with nowhere special to go and all day to get there. Or sitting with Holly and the girls on our deck under the summer stars. Yes, simple pleasures. Like walking out on a cold morning, taking a deep breath, and then returning inside to a wood fire.
But perhaps one of the most satisfying aspects of the foothills is the slower pace of life in a smaller and more intimate community. Being part of a small tight-knit community where neighbors are more than just faces passing on the road. In the Sierra Nevada Foothills, community isn’t just a concept. It’s a way of life that’s woven into the fabric of everyday interactions. There’s a sense of belonging that helps to define the every day aspects of life. Like coming together for a local farmer’s market. Volunteering for community events. Or simply sharing stories over a cup of coffee at the neighborhood cafe or a beer at a local pub.
Epilogue
For Holly and I the excitement and satisfaction of moving from the Bay Area to the Sierra Nevada Foothills wasn’t just about trading one set of surroundings for another. It was, and continues to be, about taking a risk and betting on ourselves. Betting that we could make a better and more satisfying life for ourselves. It’s been about establishing deeper connections with nature. It’s been about embracing the beauty of change. Especially in a place where the changes have had such a positive impact on us.
After eight years it’s gratifying to know that my romantic perspective of life at 3100 feet remains omnipresent in my life.
